Raster maps

Map sets can be supplied in vector or raster formats.

Raster data consist of pixels, i.e. small squares each of which has its specific value or more precisely colour. Bitmap images used in many graphic programs are examples of raster data. If raster data are examined in detail, e.g. when zooming (extending the window span), the particular pixels are visible and further details are not available.

The specific map elements, such as roads or towns are not separate objects, they cannot be selected, deleted, nor can the user change the character of their projection.

Nonetheless raster data offer cost-effective map base with appearance very similar to printed maps.
